Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 October 2026
1. About this policy
Olsen & Orringe Pty Ltd, ACN 603 928 249, trading as Home Furniture on Consignment ('HFOC', 'we', 'us' or 'our'), is committed to protecting your privacy. We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.
This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and disclose it, and how you can access it, correct it, opt out of marketing uses, or make a complaint. It applies to our website (hfoc.com.au, hfoc.au), our appointments, and our phone, email, messaging and social media channels.
2. What we collect
Depending on how you deal with us, we may collect:
- your name and contact details, including email address, phone number and delivery or postal address;
- billing details for purchases, which are processed by our payment providers (we do not store full card numbers);
- your order history, items you have viewed or saved, and appointments you have booked;
- if you consign with us, details of the items you sell and the payment details we need to pay you;
- your enquiries, correspondence, survey responses and preferences or interests, including postcode and other demographic information you choose to give us; and
- technical information about your device and how you use our website, collected through cookies and similar technologies.
3. How we collect it
We collect personal information directly from you (when you buy, consign, book an appointment, contact us, subscribe to HFOC Insider, or complete a survey), automatically through our website, and occasionally from third parties such as couriers and payment providers.
4. Why we collect and use it
We collect and use personal information to:
- process orders, arrange payment, delivery and collection, and handle returns;
- manage consignments, valuations and payments to sellers;
- book and manage appointments;
- respond to enquiries and provide customer service;
- keep records and meet our legal, tax and accounting obligations;
- improve our products, services and website, and customise the website to your interests;
- send you promotional emails about new arrivals, special offers and other information we think you may find interesting;
- contact you for market research, by email, phone, SMS; and
- advertise to you and to people like you, as described in section 6.
We may also use or disclose your personal information where required or authorised by law.
5. Who we disclose it to
We may disclose personal information to:
- couriers and delivery providers, who are required to keep it confidential;
- payment processors, banks and, where an amount owing to us becomes overdue, debt collection and recovery service providers;
- service providers that help us run our business, such as our website and e-commerce platform (Shopify), appointment booking, email marketing, analytics and IT providers;
- advertising platforms, as described in section 6;
- our professional advisers, and government or regulatory bodies where required by law.
Some of these providers are located or store data overseas, including in the United States and other countries. Where we disclose information overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure the recipient handles it consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
Except as described in this policy, we do not sell, distribute or lease your personal information to third parties unless you have given permission or the law requires it.
6. Advertising, retargeting and audience matching
What we do. To show relevant advertising to people who already know HFOC, and to reach new people who may like our furniture, we use customer information for online advertising on platforms such as Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Google (including Search, YouTube and Display), Pinterest and others.
Customer lists. We may upload contact details that we hold about our customers and people who have dealt with us (for example, by buying, booking an appointment, making an enquiry or subscribing to HFOC Insider) to these platforms. The details may include email address, phone number, first and last name, postcode and country. Before upload, these details are converted into a scrambled, non-reversible code (a 'hash'), using a standard method such as SHA-256. The platform compares that code with the codes it holds for its own users and tells us how many matched, so that we can show ads to those users. We do not receive the identity of anyone on the platform who was not already our customer.
What we use matched audiences for.
- Retargeting: showing HFOC advertising to people on our list, for instance, new arrivals or price reductions in categories they have viewed.
- Exclusion: leaving existing customers out of campaigns that are not relevant to them.
- Lookalike (or 'similar') audiences: asking the platform to find other people on its service whose interests and online behaviour resemble those of people on our list, so that we can advertise to them. The platform does this itself; we do not receive a list of those people.
What we don't do. We only upload information that we collected directly from you. We do not upload payment card details, passwords, or sensitive information as defined in the Privacy Act (such as health information). We do not sell your personal information.
The platforms. We choose platforms whose terms restrict how uploaded information may be used. Once information is uploaded, the platform's own privacy policy also applies to how it handles information about its users. These platforms are located overseas, including in the United States, so your information may be processed outside Australia.
Website visitors. We also use cookies and tracking tags (such as the Meta Pixel, Google tag and Pinterest tag) that collect information about how people browse our website, so that we can show ads to visitors on other sites and measure whether our advertising works. See 'Cookies and similar technologies' below.
Your choices. You can opt out of having your details used for advertising audiences at any time by emailing info@hfoc.com.au with the subject line 'Opt out of advertising audiences'. We will exclude your details from future uploads and will remove you from existing audiences within [30] days of your request. You can also adjust personalised advertising settings directly in your Meta, Google and Pinterest accounts. Opting out of advertising audiences does not unsubscribe you from emails, and unsubscribing from emails does not opt you out of advertising audiences, so please tell us if you want both.
7. Direct marketing
We may send you promotional emails, SMS and other communications about HFOC and, if you ask us to, about third parties we think you may find interesting. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link. You can also opt out of direct marketing at any time by tick-box where you are asked to give us your details, or by emailing info@hfoc.com.au. We will act on your request promptly.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
Our website is hosted on Shopify and uses cookies and similar technologies, some set by us and some by Shopify, our analytics tools and our advertising partners. We use them to:
- make the website work (for example, keeping items in your cart, remembering your currency and keeping you signed in);
- understand how the website is used and improve it; and
- measure and deliver our advertising, including retargeting visitors on other sites.
Most browsers accept cookies automatically, but you can change your browser settings to refuse them, which may stop parts of the website working properly.
9. Security and retention
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure, using physical, electronic and managerial safeguards. We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes above or as the law requires, and then take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify it.
10. Access and correction
You can ask us for access to the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date or incomplete, by emailing info@hfoc.com.au. We will respond within a reasonable time. We do not charge for making a request or for correcting information, but we may charge a reasonable fee to give you access. You can also ask us to delete the personal information we hold about you. We will remove all of your customer data, subject to the sales record retention requirements of Shopify and the Australian Taxation Office. We will also remove you from our advertising audiences. Records we must keep for those purposes will be retained only for the required period and then deleted.
11. Complaints
If you have a concern about how we have handled your personal information, please contact us at info@hfoc.com.au. We will investigate and reply within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.

Our website may link to other websites. We do not control them and are not responsible for their privacy practices, so please read their privacy statements.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always on this page, with the date it was last updated at the top.
