Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set up an account with HFOC?

Setting up an account with HFOC is easy, just register with your details using the 'Customer Login' link at the top of the page.

What does consignment mean?

Consignment is the act of consigning, which is placing goods in the hands of another, but retaining ownership until the goods are sold.

What style of furniture do you accept?

We specialise in contemporary-style high-end designer furniture, but we have had success selling a range of styles from many different periods.

If an item is of good quality and enduring design, it will generally find a buyer.

Why consign when I can sell the goods myself?

Consignment is easy and safe.

You will not have to spend money on marketing or advertising nor stay at home waiting for shoppers. Further, selling privately can be intrusive and may not generate the necessary interest required to sell the items effectively.

Our reputation and our ability to market, display and sell your furniture, results in a selling price which is generally higher than private sale or auction.

Where do you get your stock?

Our business would not function without the unique, high-quality and well-maintained merchandise we get from our consignment vendors.

We receive display items from commercial vendors as well as being offered furniture from some of the country’s finest private homes. Just because it doesn’t work in your home, doesn’t mean that someone else won’t be thrilled with it.

How does it work?

All new consignments begin with an approval process. We recommend submitting photos and detailed descriptions via the form on our SELL WITH US page. If the items are suitable for consignment, we will make an appointment to inspect the furniture, agree in writing on the price you will receive a contract by email for signature.

What condition is the furniture in?

To be saleable in our store, the merchandise must be in good to like-new condition. Evaluating your furniture on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best, we look for pieces that are in between an 8 and a 10.

Who takes the photos?

Once an item is accepted for consignment, an appointment is set up for our product specialist to get high-resolution photos in-situ which are suitable for our website and social media.

Who handles the logistics?

We take care of arranging all logistics with selected professional removalists.

Any major repairs or professional cleaning must be done before items are listed for sale. We can recommend selected vendors and will discuss these situations with you where necessary.

Once we have found a buyer, we will arrange for a professional removalist to collect and deliver your furniture to its new home.

Who sets the price?

Our pricing formula takes into consideration the condition, quality of construction, manufacturer, original purchase price, style, colour and demand for the item.

Priced too high and the item won’t sell. Priced too low and it is unfair to the consignment vendor. Our experience and knowledge of the market helps us to price fairly for both buyer and seller.

Do you negotiate prices?

We are experts in the online resale business. Our pricing is highly accurate and reflects current market trends and resale standards. It is in both our consignor’s and our shop’s best interests to have competitive pricing which discourages haggling.

How long do you keep the furniture?

Merchandise is consigned to HFOC for a 45-day period, however, we have found that 65% of our inventory sells in the first month.

What if my furniture fails to sell?

Items that are priced right and are desirable, sell.

In the event that your items have not sold within the first 21 days of the contract, HFOC will discount the price of the goods for the remaining term of the contract. This is done in consultation with the vendor.

Any items that have not sold within the 45-day period can be picked up, discounted for clearance or sent to auction.

When my furniture sells, how do I get paid?

Within 30 days of completion of the sale, HFOC will pay the vendor via EFT. This will be for the agreed net price as per the contract, less any costs such as transport and cleaning.

If I see something on your website I would like to purchase, can you organise delivery?

Yes. We have a professional furniture removal services which operate between all of Australia's capital cities and many places in between.

In addition, we have trusted carriers who can deliver items internationally. We have sent purchases by clients as far and wide as New York and the South Island of New Zealand.

Do you charge for delivery?

HFOC use reputable local removal companies to provide pick-up and delivery services.

They usually have flexible schedules and offer very competitive rates. In general, the rates are:

2x men and a truck is $120 per hour
1x man and a utility vehicle is $60 per hour

Any toll charges may be passed on at cost.

Is HFOC an Australian based website?

Yes. Home Furniture on Consignment (HFOC) is an Australian owned and operated company and hfoc.com.au is Australian based website.

I am not ready to take delivery of my purchase, can you store it for me?

We require goods to be collected/delivered within 7 days of purchase.

Storage fees will accrue at a charge of $50 per week, per item after this period.

What is your commission?

Our commission is 45% of the selling price of the item.

Do you offer trade discounts to designers and stylists?

We do not offer discounts to the trade as we enter into a contract with our vendors guaranteeing them a set amount upon successful sale of the item and our margins are not large enough to accommodate tiered pricing.
