About Herman Miller
Herman Miller began in 1905 as the Star Furniture Company, in the Michigan furniture heartland. D.J. De Pree became president in 1919, and in 1923 he and his father-in-law, Herman Miller, bought most of the shares, after which the company took Miller's name. During the Depression, De Pree took a gamble on designer Gilbert Rohde and modern design, and the company published its first entirely modern catalogue in 1934.
After Rohde's death in 1944, De Pree recruited George Nelson, who joined in 1945 and brought in Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard. The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956), Noguchi's coffee table and Nelson's Marshmallow sofa became manifestos for American modernism. In 1964 Robert Propst's Action Office line pointed the company towards the modern workplace, and the ergonomic revolution that followed produced Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick's Aeron chair.
In 2021 Herman Miller acquired Knoll in a $1.8 billion deal, and the combined company was renamed MillerKnoll. Its portfolio now includes Design Within Reach, HAY and Maharam.
Why buy Herman Miller second-hand? These are designs made to improve daily life and to last, so a well-kept Eames or Aeron has many years left in it. Buying through HFOC gets you genuine design history at a price well below retail. Delivery is available across all Australian metros.
